Laura Linney is a scorched earth badass out for revenge. I love her, I want to be her, feminist icon.
Animatronic ape was surprisingly good. Cannot say the same for CGI lava.
One of the best of Cynthia Rothrock’s oeuvre - she and Keech play well off each other. Sure there are sexist quips (largely to the detriment of those who say them when they are inevitably proven wrong), but a badass female protagonist with this amount of screen time is a rare fire in the action films of the early 1990s. Some of the dialogue is clunky, as is the delivery, but an enjoyable watch to be sure with lots of Cynthia kicking ass.
Roddy Piper is perfection - a Canadian who believes in the American dream. With one liners including “life’s a bitch…and she’s in heat!” and “I’m here to chew bubble gum and kick ass and i’m all outta bubble gum”, he stars in what I can only assume is a lead role written specifically for him. Is it on the nose? Yes, certainly. But the questions it poses, though lacking in subtlety and nuance, remain relevant today.
