Just gorgeous. Probably one of my favorites of the year. I loved the way it was shot, the fuzziness and ephemerality of it. I think it effectively captures the way Shelly’s vision of her profession, and perhaps even the world, belongs to a bygone era (maybe it never really even existed?). A film about unrequited desire, mediated by the peculiar sense of nighttime decay in Portland, OR. Van Sant lays bare the sexual, racial, and class dynamics that lead these errant lives to move like parallel lines—together without, however, fully making contact.
