  Fascinating how they wait until nearly the end to reveal the characters’ motivations, the care for one another that, while hidden, drives most of their actions. I might think this is masterful shit the next time I watch it.

  Makes me wish I hadn’t dropped out of Soviet Cinema class in college after the first day cause I might have watched it sooner.
  Breathtaking imagery that I found myself surrendering to after 30 minutes. Every static frame is so layered with meaning, blocked in way that evokes images on tarot cards or mosaics in a church. Combine that with Parajonov’s elaborate messing with continuity editing and lack of narration, and you get a product that, even with no understanding…

  A hodge podge of 1950s pastiche and Lynchian elements, more concerned with imitating aesthetics than saying anything impactful. Does a lot of that garish neon lighting that feels amateurish. A lot of the overt philosophizing on masculinity and self-expression I found grating.
