there is a grand unified theory of corrupted/corrupting white womanhood to be wrought out of lynch's filmography at large but two of the most potent and pointed and to that point brutal sequences in his oeuvre come from the back half of this film. yes it's fun and funny and as wizard of oz as wicked and theater's laughing uff is banging but i mostly felt the kind of sadness one feels when they pass a street performer painted a single metallic color, holding still, waiting to be paid their notice and their due.
