There are so many levels of allegory to dissect in this movie: the male gaze, ozempic, self vs self, body dysmorphia, gratitude and mindfulness, the greed of youth... lots to sink you teeth into although you may not want to simk your teeth into anything after this cronenberg style horror spectacle. Demi Moore was fully snubbed of an Oscar win.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
2/3 coasters were awesome and spooky buy the ending leaves something to be desired. I might have suggested that there's a doll of Longlegs in the basement and the protagonist becomes possessed? I find that the scariest horror films are those where the protagonist becomes the villain, showing us that we are all capable of becoming monsters. Excellent production design. Homophobic?
Under pretty colours and a mediocre excuse of a musical lies a kind of misogynistic love story about two people who never liked each other all that much to begin with. I forgot it was supposed to be a musical halway through the movie until Emma Stone starts singing poorly at her audition (sorry Emma). This would have benefited from an actual musical structure and Broadway trained actors. I love Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling and their on screen chemistry but this movie made me actively mad.
Unfortunately, this movie was mid at best. Some funny moments from Zach Galifianakis, but otherwise it was entirely predictable, which is the last thing I would use to describe any of Laika's other films. It feels as though, after Boxtrolled wasn't as successful in the box office, the studio felt the need to keep things safe. Pretty animation as always.
