I braved the ads on Tubi for this movie. In general, I found this movie to be a true Greek comedy (tragedy?) and Barry’s ultimate fate is equivalent to his stumbling-upwards trajectory in the beginning of the movie. Solid movie, beautifully shot. I think I really learned about silence in this movie and how each pause or silent action conveyed more than the dialogue in each scene.
One of the first Oscar Best picture noms and the first on my list. Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor give fantastic performances as lovers, and I completely understand why the public at the time assumed their love extended beyond the silver screen. The slapstick and special effects were surprisingly modern, it seems not much has changed. Genres blended, and I have a feeling movies in the 20s had to have everything: romance, comedy, war,
The music oftentimes got in the way of the emotion on screen, but as one of the first movies with synchronized recorded sound, I could see not wanting any periods of silence.
