We get to know Pearl in the second film of the series (the only one in which Goth gets co-writing credits, coincidentally) much more than Maxine in the two movies where she’s the final girl. It’s fairly fun, but it’s lazy as well – how easy is it, in 2024, to have the pornographer as the fatherly good guy, the Seventies’ porno scene as a benevolent and welcoming community, and the fanatic Midwestern priest as the slavering, ranting, deranged killer? Too…
The people in this movie wrote much more powerful, empowering stuff. I was expecting at least the analysis of a couple of common dark patterns, so that the viewers can hopefully recognize them when they encounter them. There are brilliant ideas on how to improve the situation around, but none gets screen time in this movie. It ends up stirring anxiety, wrapping it up with no better advice than we should log out.
