    "Vous avez brûlé une sainte!"

This film didn't click for me until a little over the halfway point, when Joan's judges dangle communion, the body of Christ, in front of her; for the first time in the movie, she seems hopeful; only for said hope to be dashed immediately, as they require her to sign the letter of abjuration to receive it.

Joan is, as explicitly stated in the film, the daughter of God. Thus, her journey presents a lot…

    "Rome. Before Christ. After Fellini"

The past is alien, even to those living in it. Even thought I found it somewhat of a slog to get through, I appreciate Fellini's depiction of history; so often films about ancient times fall into the trappings of presenting modern society with a costume; this film shows what an ancient culture (in this case, the Romans) would feel/look like to a contemporary onlooker, both in terms of the buñuelesque "plot" and of the beautiful cinematography, which feels like stepping into a eritrean fresco (or going to the museum on edibles). Definitely merits a rewatch.
