Despite the great premise and genuinely funny jokes sprinkled throughout, this film is such an unfortunate mess that flip flops between being an absurdist parody of the genre and a genuine heartfelt coming of age film. This was definitely more apparent in the second half culminating into a chaotic, nonsensical ending, which should have stayed in the first draft of the script. Coupled with the total lack of visual style and the awkward improv and editing, Bottoms feels closer to a throwaway Netflix film than the next Superbad.

The Creator 2023
I respect this film tremendously in the realm of indie low budget filmmaking. The fact that a film this beautiful and technical was made with a modest budget for a sci-fi and shot on a mirrorless camera no less, is huge! I’m excited at the prospect of more low budget high concept films like this getting made.
