The Brutalist 2024
By all accounts, this should’ve been “Movie of the Year”. I certainly expected it to be. That first teaser trailer stirred something inside me… An assurance… A promise… The return of the Cinematic Epic? And I’m not talking about runtimes — I’m talking about content. Subject matter. Experience. The visuals handpicked for that trailer elicited a scale akin to The Godfather: Part II (1974)… Or The Deer Hunter (1978) by Michael Cimino… Those timeless, textbook American Sagas we haven’t seen…

Ocean's Thirteen 2007
Exactly what a third movie should be. Louder… More entertaining… A little dumber… And reminiscent of the spirit of the original, in particular. Steven Soderbergh successfully delivers one of the best, most stylish trilogies ever. I suppose on repeat-viewings, Thirteen fails to feel as consequential as the predecessors... As in, you could live without it, but then again, why would you? Al Pacino’s the bad guy for God’s sake..! And it’s got the most laughs.

Spider-Man: No Way Home 2021
Quintessentially frustrating, in that this garbage is considered a template for your modern-day crowd-pleaser/blockbuster/spectacle — take your pick… No Way Home fits neither label. Jesus.
Tobey Maguire’s “big return” to the role of Spider-Man (the OG one who changed the landscape of Hollywood Cinema, without hyperbole btw) occurs in a living room… And a “character” called Ned downplays Tobey’s presence by writing him off as some random guy. Wowzers.
Marvel Studios shouldn’t be allowed to do this, I swear. It’s like malpractice,…

Gladiator II 2024
Ridley Scott returns to the director’s chair to deliver one of the weakest sequels I’ve ever seen. Gladiator II (2024) is thoroughly needless, overdrawn and underwhelming. The only good scenes include the opening (the seeds cleverly replacing dust in Paul Mescal’s hands) and Maximus’s armour shielding Lucius’s torso as Denzel Washington attempts to slay him underwater during the finale. That’s it.
The performances don’t come close to anything of the original… Perhaps if they were tapered around a better, more…
