Grand Theft Hamlet 2024
Kinda wish I’d just watched the production as streamed! Really interesting experiment, and it was cool to hear from random cast members and see what they were getting out of it, but the core drama of the 3-4 organizers was frequently staged and less interesting than a feature-length film requires. Glad I saw it!

I can’t talk about how much I like this without spoiling it. This is a trans tragedy, only a “horror movie” because the most horrific thing a person can do is live the wrong life. There are moments that say the quiet part a little too loud, but the omnipresent truth that it carries is more than enough to make up for it. Next time I start daydreaming about the simpler, “happier” closeted life I could’ve had, I’ll think about the final scenes of this film and count my fucking blessings.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2023
I’m doubling down. I just rewatched it and have confirmed that it’s my favorite of the year. I’ve never seen a single ep or movie of TMNT other than this.
Here’s the thing: it obviously looks great and sounds great and everything. But it’s also a perfectly paced story with a script full of joke and character payoffs. The simple miracle of a well told story is on full display here, without need for twists or multiverses or any of that shit.
Every reboot, remake, sequel, and prequel is a waste of time compared to this.
