Simple movie full of heart. Loved watching a realistic, positive representation of a committed, loving, successful relationship. I liked that the other characters, obviously broken, showcasing the health of the main relationship, seemed true-to-life, they weren't over the top versions of a crumbling drunk. The performances were very steady and natural. I want to see how much Mike Leigh had actors improvise.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
There's some logical errors here. Why was Rooney Mara's character such an amazing actress in all the scenes we later understand to be simply performances from her? But the twists were fun, the actors were great. Competent movie, would watch it again if I caught it on TV. I love that it's not trying to make some grand statement, it's just having fun with mysteries and murder.
Tits. Seriously, just tits. I can't believe they were even able to compile a non-red band trailer out of this movie. It was mostly just a lot of beautiful boobs. I can't really even remember what the story was about. It wasn't important. It was more establishing the two Renoirs, their muse, and this beautiful area on the French Riveria. Each scene looked like a Renoir painting. The light was beautiful, the women were beautiful, the costumes were wonderful, the makeup was minimal, the tits were great.
Um. Watchable. Weird. Confused as to what the main conflict was. Confused why the characters ever did anything that they did. A lot of little weird subplots and predicaments that I didn't care about but sorta hilarious to watch. Dolly Parton's scene, partly a duet with Kris Kristofferson, is completely the best part. Actually an enjoyable song.
