X and Pearl, for better or worse, had some ideas behind the pastiche. This one is just pastiche, and also has the misfortune of being undercooked and just really not any fun.

I just can’t buy into the narrative conceit no matter how hard I try.

Which is a shame because I do buy into Harmony Korine’s thesis that there’s a strange beauty in analog footage.

    ★★½

Of the many annoying types of modern liberal American cinema, perhaps the one I find most annoying is the Cinema Du Male Feminist. They are films directed by men that are heavily populated by women (and sometimes almost miraculously they represent human beings), and yet focus almost entirely on the men in the film, or seem to promote the director's own feminism, or as it is in 20th Century Women, both.

Credit where credit is due, 20th Century Women does…

    Young Mr. Lincoln

John Ford's way of giving weight to the tension between history and myth is unmatched, no matter how many other filmmakers keep trying to reach his heights. Of course, I'm reminded of Spielberg's own Lincoln film, and yet as great as that one is, Ford was able to tell so much more about a man's life by just showing its humble beginnings. Spielberg even kept the same ending, with both Lincolns walking off into the annals of history. But where Spielberg's Lincoln marches to his death, Ford's Lincoln marches to infamy.

Would make a great double feature, though!
