Eat Drink Man Woman 1994
This is a movie that really benefits from watching with an audience. the laughs and the gasps were so fun, I couldn’t stop smiling.
I consider this one of my favourite rom coms now. It melds the romance with so much silliness and outrageous emotion. Love is funny!
I’ve also always loved movies about food, and this is the first time the food was Chinese! Warmed my heart. Ang Lee is a blessing.
The Q&A with the editor after was also fantastic. Great event from Asia Society!

Her 2013
Very glad I rewatched this! I had much less life experience when this movie first came out, but am now approaching the age which I think this movie was intended for. Scarlett Johansson is incredible here with just her voice. The romance in this film feels incredibly real despite this being a future that may never exist.
AI becoming a replacement for socialization with humans felt to me like a gimmicky subject matter when this first came out, but now feels like an incredibly serious topic. Even the fashion of this film’s time feels prescient.

Perfect Days 2023
A small-scale slice-of-life that romanticizes the joys of a modest existence: being kind, caring about your craft, making art, and taking care of others. Perfect Days acknowledges the loneliness of this kind of life as well, but overall celebrates living in harmony with the present. Out of the Cannes films I’ve seen this festival, this one spoke the most to me.

Parasite 2019
A perfect movie!
The most amazing thing about this film is how unconventional it is, yet it feels so natural and coherent. Bong Joon-ho is such an innovator in this regard. Some examples:
- There are two totally separate but both incredibly long, tense sequences. So much happens in these sequences, and it's bewildering that it just keeps going and going, until finally it's over and you can catch your breath.
- The way each family member scammed their way…Translated from by
