    This is taut, well-crafted movie’s movie. Very little excess fat. Just a lean script with great propulsion. Perhaps the opening montage is a bit long but it has a very clear purpose of highlighting the historical context and family that will be the centerpiece of this story.

    A very powerful story. Neat and innovative choice to shoot entirely in first person. And the hard cuts across time are always welcome in my book.

    The young man who played Turner, Brandon Wilson, was really good. As was Hamish Linklater as the silent antagonist of the racist schoolmaster.
