I was absolutely loving it, and then the abrupt tonal shift really just took me out of it. I *get* what it's doing, and I appreciate it (Why can't a story about a character like this be farcical, funny, or ridiculous? Why does it have to be sad?) I think it was just so abrupt that I couldn't appreciate those questions *within* the story.
