Conclave 2024
It was tough not to give this a slightly higher score - I really enjoyed it - but it didn't really land in the way that I thought it should've/could've. It was one of the few movies I've seen lately that really needed to be longer - it had more to say and a much more decisive statement to make that it just... didn't. Ralph Fiennes is a treasure... but like doesn't everyone in the world already know that? (And banger cast throughout, really - Lithgow & Tucci? Haw, man...)

The Day of the Jackal 1973
Europe of the 1960s-1970s winds up being one of the most compelling characters here. It also has many of the traits you'd expect: a somewhat plodding plot that is about 30 minutes too long, a ripcord-quick ending and resolution (not always a bad thing), and a debonair assassin who can apparently kill people by karate chopping them once or lightly touching their neck immediately after coitus.
