  Weirdly enough, and I honestly don't know why, this one didn't captive me as much as The Witch or The Lighthouse did

  It is still a phenomenal movie though, classic gothic horror has never been so back as now

  Also I just love when Eggers portrays women who aren't one-dimensional, who have a multitude of complicated feelings that cannot be contained by their backwards surroundings, and eventually are led to succumb to the darkness calling to them, all while being simply shown as a person like any other, freed from the constant moral judgement they've experienced in mortal life.

  I went into this movie expecting just another silly film based on a game I like, that doesn't understand its source material.

  But what I got instead was a fully original story that deeply understood the emotions behind the Fatal Frame series, AND IT'S EXPLICITLY A LESBIAN TRAGEDY TOO????
  OH MY GOD HOW ARE THE GAYS SLEEPING ON THIS, IT EVEN HAS THE UTENA ENDING COMPOSITION WHAT THE FUCK???????

  A really interesting piece alongside its source material.
  I felt what it was going for pretty early on, and, although some choices in "fun little detail from the manga" are kind of a miss for me, this was a rather unique angle to adapt Tomie into film.
  The purposeful obscuring of Tomie's face, the very first thing shown in the manga, for the majority of the movie feels delightful bold & smartly used.
