City of God 2002
A masterpiece of a film with a simple premise of documenting life in the extre poverty of the City of God at this point in time. The way this film is shot is so raw and unflitered; it does not hesiate to focus on the extremity of violence, and the scenes involving children are especially harrowing. Yet it rarely (if ever) feels gratuitous, but rather essential to understand life.

One of the best examples of utter suspense that I have seen. Movie takes off immediately and never stops building. I felt winded at the end. At first I thought Jackman was stealing the show, but Gyllenhaal delivered such a nuanced and subtle performance that I came away thinking he was the highlight of the film.
