i think the reason most film adaptations of chekhov don’t quite work is because they take the text far too seriously. despite his reputation as a father figure in the russian literary canon, chekhov’s humor is inherently silly at times. some interesting and illuminating moments in this but what really moved me were the images of baldwin immersing himself fully in the culture of a foreign land, a country that likely felt more like home to him than his native one. and there’s a shot toward the end where he smiles, and i mean really smiles—from ear to ear, eyes crinkling at the corners, gapped teeth on full display—that is just so breathtakingly beautiful.
