They Live 1988
Part of my Cronenberg and Carpenter catchup, finally saw this for the first time. Not without bits that seem a bit slow / meandering / weak, but I loved that it somehow reminded me of the original XCOM games, with its weird, old-school depiction of alien life on Earth.
Much like Scanners with Cronenberg, this made me realise I need to see everything Carpenter has done. 80s sci-fi is quite the thing, and going back to it now makes modern sci-fi feel quite kinda stiff and dull in comparison.

The Fly 1986
Bonkers and fun, but genuinely dramatic and super lean storytelling from start to finish. On paper Geena Davis' character probably wasn't much, but her performance (and her chemistry with Goldblum, carrying over from their real-life relationship at the time), keeps everything together.
Such a banger. Up there with Videodrome.
