Initial thought: should you use mistranslation/language barrier as a humor mechanism this extensively if you aren’t then going to deliver some illuminated understanding about those themes? Yes, often we are laughing at Bob and Charlotte as much as we are laughing at the Cathy Park Hong Bad English-es of the Japanese, but overall Coppola’s treatment of her chosen setting feels unearned.

I don’t think I like a film that relies so heavily on narration of a present self about a past self.
But there’s something that is so so alluring about sinuous skin against blue ass water/sky, their contrast. BFI review calls this piece “a near-ballet of a film that’s at least as much a work of choreography as of verbal storytelling.” I love that phrasing, near-ballet.
