Yes, music biopics are a staid and dead subgenre. No, I do not think we need any more—at least not following this current trajectory. Yes, Timmy gives a great performance and him singing these songs is engaging enough. No, it is not any different from any other biopic.

Only occasionally slipping into Spielbergian syrupy sentimentality, September 5 is a journalistic dive into the ABC Sports team’s quest to bring the hostage-taking of Israeli athletes and coaches by Palestinian terrorists to the world. I had seen Munich years ago, so I was quite familiar with the events. But what the film does quite well is focusing on the journalism. It delves into the ethical dilemmas, fraternal responsibilities, and tough decision-making involved in breaking news. And that’s when the film feels richest.

It never transcends. It’s very much deserving of its (lone) screenplay nomination. But I don’t think it was snubbed entirely that much.

The pacing is incomprehensible and illogical. The narrative is messy and her film making intentions unclear. An auteur...she is not.

And, perhaps worse, is that for most of the film, I…

I understand that this is archival footage and was never meant to be released. And it works still, it's glorious getting to see a professionally recorded version of this. But there are factors that sort of limit the magic.

Something I found really difficult to overcome was the speed with which they transition between numbers. It felt like there was absolutely no time to digest, to clap, and even though it's recorded, I still think that's important to transmitting the…
