  Perfect Blue 1997

  Watching something that various film circles have discussed ad nauseum as the template for so many films in the thriller genre, many of which I had already seen, almost primed me to expect something familiar from Perfect Blue, and yet this film kept me guessing until the very end. 

  The immersive 2D animation, an addictive musical score, the Hitchcockian trademarks (voyeurism, unreliable narrator) as well its tragically relevant exploration of the psychological toll of fame and toxic fandom come together…

  Coming hot off the heels of Longlegs, this isn’t the follow up that I expected to get from Osgood Perkins. Much of that boils down to the film’s marketing which doesn’t truly prepare one for just how unserious it is. 

  NEON appears to have aped (pun intended) the marketing campaign of Longlegs, relying heavily on cryptic promotional teasers and hyperbolic pull quotes to generate interest and hype. In the case of Longlegs, this strategy paid off and catapulted the film…

  Say what you want about the rest of the film (it’s even worse than I remember), but that forest scene with Magneto and the Quicksilver gag tho!
