Bong Joon-Ho’s style of science fiction is possibly my favorite cinematic interpretation of the genre. Sci-fi at its core is meant to reflect the failures and true nature of humanity through the advancement of technology. With The Host and Snowpiercer, it is dramatic and bleak with slight glimpses of hope. In Mickey 17, it is more explicitly hopeful and lighter in tone without sacrificing more serious moments. Strong contender for funniest use of the Wilhelm scream.

Amazing first half, second half is good and the ending has me conflicted. One of the films where I imagine a second viewing would be complementary to understanding the perspectives of the minor characters, particularly Zsófia. Glad I saw it in IMAX.

Apocalypto 2006
Very engrossing as both an action film and work of historical fiction. Apocalypto explores a deeply intriguing and mythic world, one that is definitely under-explored in cinema. The film lost momentum for me in the second act but the final 40 minutes are extremely compelling and outmatch most modern action sequences.
