There’s some really interesting visual style here, and Mia Goth is transcendent, but ultimately the movie began to feel like a series of increasingly kooky stunts contrived to convince the audience that this weirdo is in fact a real weirdo.
One hour and 42 minutes with a serial killer as the empathetic “in” for the movie is a pretty big ask. While well crafted, in the end Pearl was unable to bear the weight of its premise.
Then again, what do I know? I was on some medication that was making my back ache.
