This was fucking class. Caught me completely off guard how good it actually was. From the trailers I reckoned it was going to be just another run of the mill espionage drama/thriller, but it had a lot more to it. The script was extremely cut throat and heavy on the dry humour and satire, giving the film a feeling of self awareness which helped to elevate it and avoided it from dwindling into rom-commish vibes.

    All the characters had clearly…

This is really good until it isn’t.

The first two acts were phenomenal. Bong Joon-Ho’s signature quirkiness shined through and I was in stitches constantly. I can’t remember having laughed so much in the cinema ever. This ranged from visual gags, to the script and also to the line deliveries themselves.

Felt this on a personal level. Proper reminded me of when me and my mum used to go on our summer holiday abroad every year. Some great memories and this reminding me of them made my heart warm. Growing up with a young single parent I didn’t quite understand just how much constant stress and pressure my mum was under. Sometimes you don’t realise how much your loved ones sacrifice for you and the realisation that you don’t show them enough appreciation can be quite hard hitting. Fucking love you Mum.

A biopic made by a man about a woman who was famously destroyed by men- great start! Dominik uses the fiction element of the film to vent his own grievances and horrific attitude towards women. It’s ultimately distasteful as fuck and he should hang his head in shame. No amount of hyper-stylisation can hide how vulgar this film is and I struggle to see how it even made it this far in today’s (apparently) more progressive climate.
