Poor Things 2023
This film has done for egg custard tarts what pulp fiction did for the $5 milkshake

The Old Oak 2023
Too many conflicts left unresolved in an awkwardly paced encounter here but I can’t knock 87 year old Ken Loach for using his platform to highlight the plight of refugees arriving in a devastated former mining community in the North of England. If this is indeed his last film it’s a fitting way to end a career that has consistently given attention to important social issues. Special shoutout to Robbie Ryan who managed to somehow shoot this and Poor Things in the same year making them both look brilliant in completely different ways.
