It wasn't great. The relationship between Leon and Mathilda is very uncomfortable. On top of that most of the movie was pretty weak, the plot was average and the characters were okay at best. I did really like the symbolism in the plant though.
I don't think I really understood this movie. Then again, I don't think I was meant to. Nothing really happened, but yet there was this unease that wouldn't go away, and an emotional connection to characters who were so easy to love, but at the same time so hard to. The camcorder playback evoked this nostalgia like you were looking back on old memories, and the flashing lights left you questioning everything you thought you knew about aftersun.
The thing that didn't make sense though, is how a couple of Scottish people didn't get sunburnt after a week on the beach.
It was a good coming of age movie, fun to watch, nothing particularly groundbreaking though. The plot did get pretty ridiculous, to the point it became a bit unconvincing. They seemed to forget the age of the main character a fair bit. I did enjoy the resolution at the end however.
This movie is a classic. Hilarious, entertaining, great storyline and some of the funniest and most creative fight choreography of all time. Looking at this from a filmmaking perspective, the final fight in the cave is very impressive from a CGI standpoint, switching between the skeletons and normal people must have been a challenge. This movie is just as good with every rewatch.
