watched half of this at a screening where the screenwriter talked about how first and foremost, it was a story about two people seeking autonomy or freedom from societal expectation and the political commentary was just a product of his experiences and relationships-- there was no specific political message in mind while he was writing (though I have my own opinions on how plausible that actually is).
