The first half worked, I was disturbed! Then I kept waiting and waiting for the redemption... and was not satisfied. I found the journey of the Jesus-imitating thief reminiscent of Voltaire's Candide the whole way through - starts with birth, ignorance, base instincts, then the ego, violence, and greed, learned from the extremes of the society he wades through. He absorbs, reflects, reacts, also in a world of hyperbole. The critiques of politics/war/consumerism/colonialism/religion are on full display in this film…

The highest of highs, the lowest of lows. Some of my favorite dance scenes ever (!!), rivaling the vibrant, intimate, obtuse camera shots of Strictly Ballroom, sweeping you to ecstatic heights with the Bee Gee’s in your ear.
