sometimes i feel like trying to understand yourself as a person is just about trying to understand your parents and the choices they made for you. children raised in america by chinese immigrants grow up with two languages and two ideologies on prioritizing the individual or prioritizing the community. they exist relentlessly at odds with each other, and this movie shows the very real tension within families and within the individual. but it also shows the beautiful complexity that comes…

since watching this for the first time six years ago, having climbed my way into a higher class than the one i grew up in, heavy with a survivor’s guilt that lingers despite every dollar i send back home and every hour ive spent organizing… there was a reason i put off rewatching this movie (it fucks me up)

    cried 4 times 👍

fuck i mean, its good i guess (esp the first half), but would it hurt to condemn israel a bit more explicitly?

yeah yeah corbet likes ambiguity or whatever, but i think that if you’re pro-palestine and you’re releasing a holocaust-related movie in 2024, you gotta toe that line better.

maybe im being extra harsh because i think the holocaust genre is over-saturated and im salty that the immigrant/artist story executed pretty effectively here is a white immigrant/artist story.

can u tell that i actually did enjoy watching this movie lol
