  Nemesis 1992

  I think of this as the "We have Blade Runner at home" film genre, and this is at the very top of the pile. It has a genuine grimy cyberpunk aesthetic that's missing from a lot of its contemporary peers. The action is simultaneously cool and over the top in a laugh out loud sort of way. This movie is a hidden gem in so many ways and I can't recommend it enough.

  Goes right up to the line of feeling silly but somehow ends up feeling iconic instead. It's easy to see why the sequels struggle to find this perfect balance and often slip into unintentional parodies.

  Shortcomings 2023

  Great adaptation and exceptional cast, but despite Tomine's direct involvement as the screenwriter, the original comic has a realness to it that the movie only showed small glimpses of. Either way it was fun and does the book justice overall, hopefully there will be more adaptations of Tomine's comics in the future with him on board as the screenwriter.
