Yoooo. This blew me away. Every element is on point, the writing, acting, cinematography, the score all cohesively painting a heartbreaking story of isolation against an oil-black Texas panhandle backdrop. I will be watching this many more times.

Sweet Bird of Youth 1962
Okay I believe that all of this film’s problems come from direction? The performances are excellent, the writing is excellent, but the style and tone is so hokey and cheesy. Way too many flashbacks, way too campy. I wish they had opted for a more understated approach.

A Streetcar Named Desire 1951
Perhaps I’d built this one up too much in my mind, just because of its place in movie history. Don’t get me wrong it was a great film, full of great performances, and I was really shocked at how explicit it’s social commentary was for a movie from 1951 and I found that impressive. Definitely an unpleasant watch (by design), and though this is a freezing cold take, it was incredible how charismatic and vile Brando’s performance was. Kim Hunter’s Stella was so tender and heartbreaking. Tennessee Williams is so GOATed.

His Girl Friday 1940
This was a really charming film, you could palpably feel how much it was originally a stage play with all the comedic timing and choreography of the reporters talking on their phones. Though the movie is mostly a comedy, there were surprisingly grounded and powerful moments such as the interview scene with Earl in his cell, which felt like a prototypical Silence of the Lambs. Rosalind Russell was a revelation, and Cary Grant was downright belligerent but in a good way.
