Bill Murray’s Frank is such an asshole (albeit hilariously so) that I find myself wanting his comeuppance to be more severe and weighty. It bothers me that Karen Allen’s Claire continues her wide-eyed infatuation with him even as he proves again and again that he’s a terrible man (traditionally, Scrooge’s love Belle is irretrievably lost to him, the one true price he pays for his life full of callous disregard). Even so, this is a fun and funny adaptation of the well-worn tale.
Hadn’t seen this since I was a teen, 20+ years ago. I don’t think it’s even a tick less enjoyable now than it was then. Goes great with a post-midnight snack!
After the all-time greatness of The Empire Strikes Back, ROTJ feels silly at times - we got lil’ teddy bears defeating armored war machines by throwing rocks at them - but the opening stretch at Jabba’s palace, and the dramatic and ultimately poignant final confrontation between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor, shore this concluding chapter up to satisfaction.
This one isn’t for everyone. The pacing is exceedingly deliberate; the dialogue is sparse. Multiple scenes consist in single shots of mundane activity that stretch on for several minutes without a word being spoken. However, these open spaces give viewers room to soak in the experience of the characters, to live alongside them, filling in their inner monologues with our own. I found this effective at intermingling my thoughts and feelings with those of the characters, creating emotional stakes.
