I picked up a Japanese blu-ray of this film since it’s OOP in the US. Kind of funny owning a film that’s 99% shot in standard definition on an HD disc, but it’s likely the best home release master available so I was happy to indulge. Still horrifying. Still tense as hell. And still a really interesting portrait of photo journalists. While the shock didn’t diminish for me (the imagery and sound are very potent), I paid more attention to Jessie and Lee’s relationship this time. There was a lot more to chew on performance and writing-wise than I expected from a rewatch.
One of only a couple non-horror films I made time to see this month. I don't know where to begin, but my rating went up from 4.5 overnight. Mikey Madison is a revelation!
