I liked the aesthetics they created for this but it’s a much worse film in every way compared to the original. Which is a shame, because the director Steven S DeKnight created the show Spartacus, which did more with less. He might have had a better outcome with this film if it was split into two. Or if this was pitched a few years later it might have made for a great streaming tv show.
But the two worst parts…
With the exception of a few moments, I think this is as close to perfect as an adventure movie can get.
From the moment Jack Sparrow steps off his sinking ship onto the docks the movie is nothing but a good time. The writing, the humor and the music just hit. And it was incredibly weird to see Johnny Depp act as Jack and not just do a caricature of him.
This is a perfect stand alone adventure, but it’s so good that it makes sense why it spawned a franchise. It was great seeing in theaters for the Disney 100 rerelease.
I think the good job deconstructing Arthur and a lot of this seemed like a response to the “Da Joker is so cool” reception from the first one.
And the broad themes they go for worked for me but overall I walked out without any strong feelings.
AMC was also showing Furious 7 as a $5 dollar Fan Fave but unfortunately I was seeing Joker 2 with a group and was unable to go see Furious 7 instead.
