Takahata is able to make a concept as simple as a person reminiscing on her life and sharing her worldview with others so fascinating and interesting. Choosing not to cut short any prolonged scenes of silence is certainly an interesting move, but it's one that I found to increase my appreciation of the film. One could argue that the movie doesn't need a 5 minute scene about a pineapple, but these scenes of silence, awkwardness, pondering, and everything in-between really…
