After a week of thinking about it, I've had some thoughts I wanted to write down.

The sound design especially was pretty unnerving. The Count's gorging on the flesh and blood of others is simultaneously portrayed in the audio of sensations both horrific and orgasmic, mixing disgustingly wet, tangible sounds with voices high-pitched in erotic thrill. There's an idea of something pleasurable to those feasted upon in this act of brutality, even as both victims are reduced to literal pieces…

Knew very little about this film before going in and was absolutely blown away. The black-and-white cinematography alone is so gorgeous that it makes me mad most movies of this era don't look as good. The bit of humor holds up really well, carried almost entirely on the backs of the two main leads and their fantastic comedic timing.

It's easy to assume that a musical romantic-dramedy film about a struggling actress and a jazz player, both with dreams of making it big, would be a simple, overused concept. I went in with very low expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. What would have been a 2.5 or 3-star movie is elevated by fantastic set and production design, oddly-unique camerawork (for a movie like this), and best of all, some neat practical monster animatronic costumes. Definitely struggles with some pacing issues in the first two acts, and it does get close to that "marvel-esc" sense of infuriatingly-sarcastic humor, but luckily never arrives there fully. It felt very much like D&D, and that's probably as much as we can ask from the film.
