  We need more Lovecraft film adaptations. This has its moments, like the atmospheric beginning and ending with narration taken straight from the original text. I also liked the Easter eggs of Miskatonic University and the Necronomicon. But, in the end, there was just too much gore for a Lovecraft adaptation. I like The Thing, but Lovecraft is not John Carpenter. Lovecraft works because of dread and suspense, and this film, while it does have some ominous build-up, spent too much time on flashy effects and body horror.
