Dumplings (2004) is a brazen exploration of fear of ageing / loss of desirability associated with ageing and includes disturbing depictions of cannibalistic consumption / loss of morality and ultimately deathly destruction driven by the extremity of these fears. The sonic world of this film is potent and unsettling, raw. Could have slowed down and allowed more of the uncomfortable emotional underpinnings (vs the ostensibly uncomfortable) elements of the film to sink in further. Christopher Doyle’s work is mesmeric and intimate, beautiful imagery depicting dark and grotesque displays of human nature.
