The Blob 1988
Enjoyable in a Spielberg-ian way for the first 2/3rds of the film. Matt Dillon looks just unacceptable here. Tough to discern what the blob's abilities are. Effects are great and genuinely disturbing at points and dialogue is more cleverly written than most. Includes the cynical 80's twist that the blob is an amerikan biological warfare experiment, but then abandons that when the head government response agent (an elderly black man) is gobbled up by the blob and his white subordinates rally to the town's side. Reactionary garbage with the veneer of state critique.

From Beyond 1986
Effects were pretty good but not worth the price of admission. The great Ken Foree is wasted here. Any potentially interesting themes regarding sexual performance and sadism are not explored in any meaningful way. Another limp Lovecraft adaptation that, although it represents a step back from the revoltingly callous shock of Reanimator, still struggles to find a reason for existing.
