The movie is adapting a novel that was clearly meant to be taken at face value. So on one hand you have the propaganda reels and also the cool fight scenes and camaraderie on the battlefield. As a viewer, I was reminded how farcical the society was but also how great fighting for a common cause was. This explains why both the left and the right claim this movie as theirs. But the fault lies in the director and screenwriter not being able to adapt the source material for their ends

That being said, this movie FUCKS

Boring, pretentious and overlong. The movie would have been better if it focused on just one plot line, but it had to mess it up by focusing on two, with the second being infinitely more excruciating to sit through. I have seen other Wong Kar-Wai films and I usually appreciate the craft behind them but this is one that I definitely hate.

It’s the 26th of October 1984. You’re watching Terminator on the big screen with that cute girl from class. As the credits roll, she looks visibly shaken. Her eyes look just like Linda Hamilton’s. This could be the night.

You walk out of the theater together and you look at the streets of LA washed by incandescent lights. They don’t have those deep smoky blues that you saw on film.  You wish real life was as cinematic as the Terminator.
