Outside of some reserved dramatic work from Kristen Wiig, this didn’t have much going for it. I certainly like the cast. Hailee Steinfeld I love obviously and Nick Nolte was pretty wholesome. Problem is, the central relationship that develops didn’t earn my investment. Guy Pearce’s character I found unlikeable and thought Wiig deserved way better. Things play out very slowly only for it to speed way up near the end by hitting a bunch of milestones. Unfortunately wasn’t an engaging indie.

This one snuck up on me. Didn’t know it was based on real lives, but it was nice getting to know the story of the Emersons. One that’s heartfelt, very warm and soulful. The music is calming yet melancholic, with Baby in particular giving me chills when it first plays. A well crafted film bouncing back and forth in time as it reveals how this long lost album came to be. There’s much depth here, I really got a sense…

"You promised me the drive. Not the win."

God damn. This was my most anticipated film of 2019 and it delivered on all fronts and then some. Christian Bale has always been my favourite actor and I'm not kidding you one bit in saying that this has become my favourite performance and perhaps movie with him. James Mangold has crafted such a well made movie that feels big, epic and yet, it didn't lose any intimacy or heart.

John Preston and John Wick would totally be best friends. I mean, they both underwent life altering events due to a puppy.

Christian Bale makes this 10x better. I just find it insanely watchable seeing his character gradually feel emotion while undergoing an internal conflict. It's best not to take this too seriously. It's a slice of early 2000s dystopian cheesy sci-fi goodness and it knows it. If this got a higher budget, a bigger studio behind it and a more prominent director, this could've been on the level of other beloved sci-fi movies.
