  With Gummo, Harmony Korine paints a bleak portrait of American suburban life. Utterly unconcerned with the beautiful, Gummo is a world of the imbecile, the freak, the misunderstood and left out. Korine’s creation is horrific and tragic while managing to be endearing and relatable at all times. Though Gummo’s subjects are mostly gross, ugly caricatures, and often intensely shocking, its candid lens injects viewers into their world, forcing them, kicking and screaming, to empathize.
