KOP iMax.
Ultimately fun but a bit scattered & over-indulgent. Bong has a lot of things he's pissed about (Trump, colonization, capitalism, social media, sauces?) and crams it all in here. Some things work, some things don't. Felt like it sagged from the middle until the finale starts to pick up. The ending is quite satisfying though. Everyone is overacting intentionally here and it's all quite good.
Felt kinda redundant in Bong's filmography?
Streamed.
Really cool. Experimental, surreal, looks ancient and haunted. The effects are so much more interesting than Dracula's little bat puppets (which came out around the same time). The shadow sequences, skeleton dreams, and especially the funeral procession scene are really memorable. The whole thing feels like a nightmare.
But it really is more of a visual treat than anything else. There's barely a plot or characters here. It certainly doesn't have the emotional resonance of something like Passion of Joan of Arc (the only other Dreyer I've seen to-date).
In terms of old timey vampires, this is better than Dracula and on-par with Nosferatu.
KOP iMax.
Previous viewing was on a flight. The iMax experience definitely improves how I feel about it. It still has a shaky script and the ending transitions from a semblance of scientific reality to movie magic in a somewhat corny way. With the iMax screen and sound though, once it gets into space it becomes maybe the most visceral and enveloping movie watching experience. Also the organ parts of the score shred.
This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.
Mahoning Roadshow at PFS
Pretty beat up faded 35mm print projected open matte. Definitely provided some atmosphere.
So good. A complete takedown of misogyny and American societal ills in less than 90 minutes. Despite the short run time you get a fully formed arc and descent into violence. The progression from the first, highly visceral kill to uninhibited carnage is excellent.
And the ending is perfect. Phil's a good boy.
