Apart from excellent CGI and the good underlying message to protect nature/the oceans, this film didn't really live up to expectations, despite its years in development.
Jake Sully is hunted (again) by Quaritch (now in Avatar form since the human Quaritch didn't survive the last movie), and in the effort of not endangering his tribe he and his family leave to live with another (water) tribe and endanger that. The second act mainly consists of Jake's four kids splashing around…
If I would have to name a movie as my favourite, this would be it. The Shawshank Redemption is a perfectly written, acted and filmed movie with a stellar soundtrack and satisfying ending. And of course some immortal quotes - Get busy living or get busy dying. It also leaves one with a weird sense of hopefulness. Watch this movie when you're down, and you'll feel better.
Encanto was obviously meant to be a feel-good movie, but everything moves just a little to fast for any deeper feelings to settle in. Disney boldly attempts to focus on a ton of characters and - with the help of Lin-Manuel Mirandas lively soundtrack - almost pulls it off. In the end though, the overflow of characters causes a lack of deeper character exploration and development, because every conflict has to be neatly tied up in time before we move…
