Serviceable but ultimately mid early code morality tale. Has some well directed dialogue but Bogart’s character drags the whole thing down by being unrepentant and static
Pretty entertaining at points but overall fails to cohere into a consistent picture. Very little connective tissue between set piece sequences (which especially early on are pretty good) which results in an overall effect of things just happening one after another without clear causality. Especially when the primary antagonist is reintroduced the actor just has very little to work with. It’s no plants all payoff and just feels sloppy as a result.
If I could rewrite this I would open…
Art could have had them both, maybe by the end he does?
The lighting in this film is incredible, it’s very gratifying to see my favorite tool playing in every shot (silver underbounce) and it gives the film a surreal heightened feeling in its day scenes that allow it to sell extremely expressionistic night exts in its climax. The white wall confrontation (where Patrick propositions a married Tashi) and the wind storm parking lot are two of the most beautiful and striking things I’ve seen this year.
An excellent journeyman thriller from a crew at the top of their game. Feels like a 70s thriller with a knockout late 90s cast. Sloppy in places but the script holds everything together tightly
