I can't say I got 4 stars of enjoyment out of this film as it is thematically very dark and horrible. - a bit darker than I thought it would be going in and not the kind of film I generally go for in that sense. It is beautifully shot, well acted and well written, but I just felt a bit hollowed out by how relentless it is. Considering its not a straight up horror it did feel like there should have been more thoughtful provocation in the story, which would have saved it from feeling quite so dire.

Perfect Days 2023
I'm a sucker for a film like this - following someone's life for a bit with some lovely, meaningful, cinematography and gentle ponderings on life. Kōji Yakusho's bloody excellent to watch, and such good minutiae of life in all forms - from Yakusho's expressions to the writing and directing, I'm sure. An introverted trip I especially enjoyed as a music loving photographer. I was left a little wanting for more in story by the end, but I'm more than happy the film exists as is.

Oldboy 2003
Overall, good cinematography and visual storytelling, with the exception of some intentionally ambiguous or confusing bits as it's a mystery involving some memory loss. Acting was also good, though the female protagonist suffered as I think she could have been written better. Started off pretty strong, even the (limited) 2003 CGI wasn't too bad/distracting. But the fleshing out of the main protagonists didn't really come to fruition - kinda 1.5 dimensional. It ended up feeling like there were some missing…
