Rouge 1987
The contrast between operatic charm and visceral bitterness really sells this film; the ornateness and disparity of 1930s Hong Kong cloaks Fleur’s suffering until it explodes, and subsequently bleeds into the cracks of Yuen and Chor’s kitsch idealism. She’s catharsis and its antithesis. What an incredible portrait of a ghost. Fleur and Chor were the real fucking romance.
